I’m sure you’ve all been there – you have this freaking AMAZING idea strike you. It could be something that would be a huge change for you, or maybe it’s something that would require you to put yourself out there in a new way and get a little vulnerable?
Either way, you feel like you’ve got the PERFECT plan and then all of a sudden, the evil peanut gallery in your mind starts yelling at you, trying to keep you in your comfort zone and playing small.
When you’re really following your dreams, you’ll inevitably have to take a huge leap of faith, which means FEAR is going to come knock on your door. Anytime you’re deciding NOT to play small, your voice of judgment (aka fear) will try to keep you small and in your comfort zone – fear and risk don’t get along so well. So when you are experiencing fear, it’s likely because you’re standing on the edge of GREATNESS, ready to take that plunge into the very place where you will grow and totally transform your life.
Fear tends to come up for me pretty often (and I feel kinda good about that because it means I’m making HUGE shifts!) as I take massive action in growing my business, commit to seemingly crazy-town goals, start putting lots of new product out there, and being more vulnerable and open to others (promoting my business, prospecting, putting out new content, planning a teleclass, etc.). Fear usually manifests for me in the form of “what if…” – and specifically, this week it was after I had scheduled all these incredible opportunities that I thought:
That was a pretty crappy feeling, for sure, and had I let my “what ifs” keep spiraling out of control, it would have probably led me to delete the Facebook events I just created and just say “nevermind” or “I can wait to do this until I feel more ready.” But that’s not my style! Instead, I asked myself how the heck I could deal with these what ifs, because I knew they’d be back to bother me later if I didn’t deal with them NOW. I don’t intend to have this launch be the only thing I do that is worth having fear show up in my life! I want to play BIG, and fully live my life! No playing small over here, please!
So what did I come up with? Well… I decided to take to my journal. I wrote down all my fearful “what ifs” on the page.
Then, I decided to flip them all around and wrote down all the positive “what ifs” – aka my motivation for being a crazy-pants ambitious entrepreneur in the first place! That looked something like this:
“What if I double my income by doing what I LOVE and helping others actualize their fullest life experience?”
“What if I am living so fully that I am experiencing all emotions deeper and with greater intensity?”
“What if I meet and become great friends with my role models in my industry?”
“What if I can surrender to the uncertainty, because that’s where possibility lives?”
“What if it all works out even better than I can imagine?”
“What if I am able to travel the world doing what I love and having the financial freedom and flexibility in my schedule and business to do so?”
“What if I am an incredibly powerful and transformative coach and provide extreme value for my clients?”
“What if I am powerful beyond measure?”
“What if I become more of myself and grow limitlessly in the process of walking my talk?”
Typing this now, I think these would be AWESOME to have hanging on my wall or mirror where I can see them constantly and be reminded of the pleasure of doing what I’m doing!
This experience really brought me back to one of my favorite quotes of all time by Marianne Williamson:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
I’d love to hear from you in the comments below: What are your fearful “what ifs” and how can you flip them into more empowering “what ifs” ?!
I hope you all have a fantastic week!
